Serena Manitoba Inc. has been offering fertility awareness information and instruction in recognized methods of Natural Family Planning (NFP) since 1977. Even prior to incorporation , a preliminary organization was teaching NFP in Manitoba since the early 1960’s. Some may term it ‘natural contraception’; however, ‘family planning’ and ‘regulation of conception’ may be more comprehensive terms to describe the overall needs expressed by those who contact Serena Manitoba.
Those who wish to space births at the present time, as well as many who are wanting to get pregnant seek us out. Serena Manitoba teacher-couples offer instruction in recognized effective methods of NFP. Couples discern how they will use the acquired information in their family planning.
Initial instruction in the sympto-thermal method of NFP by an accredited teacher-couple is given in a two-hour class setting. Approximately six weeks later, a brief follow-up session takes place with individual couples. In 2008, 119 individuals took full class instruction in NFP by Serena Manitoba teacher-couples.
We also educate in areas such as fertility awareness and appreciation, preparing for marriage, natural family planning following childbirth, during breastfeeding and during the pre-menopausal years.
Serena Manitoba provides informational materials and presentations on request. This has included a booth at the Winnipeg Baby & Kids Show, The Canadian Association of Midwives Conference, The Red River Ex, 4-H groups, pro-life luncheons, marriage enrichment events, marriage preparation groups and conferences. We mail out hundreds of information packages.
Our office is staffed by one part time staff member.
In the past several years, our fundraising events have included a Cruise & Brunch onboard Canada’s largest riverboat – the Paddlewheel Queen, as well as Aunt Sarah’s Simply Delicious chocolate bar sales, a campaign with Mom’s Pantry Products, and a Pancake Breakfast & Family FunFest.
Serena Manitoba facilitates the training of couples to prepare them for accreditation by Serena Canada. We currently are training several new couples to teach Natural Family Planning.
We rely on enthusiastic volunteer couples to make up our executive and board, which meets twice a year, as well as our annual general meeting. Volunteer couples are also trained as presenters about NFP and the services that Serena Manitoba offers.
Student volunteers and others to assist with office needs such as photocopying, compiling information kits, and mail outs are very much appreciated.
Serena Manitoba Inc. is a registered charity and issues tax receipts. You can make a safe online donation through PayPal, or send it through the mail. We are thankful for – and rely on – your generosity! The actual cost per person is approximately $260; in order to make the classes available to anyone, we currently request a $75 registration fee.
